The Procedure
Lip augmentation is a procedure to increase the size
of the lips in order to make them more full and voluptuous.
It often involves putting something into the lips to
fill them up. A variety of substances have been used
for this purpose including fat or fibrous tissue from
your own body, or other materials such as collagen,
silicon, goretex fibers, etc. In addition, there are
surgical techniques for bringing some of the tissue
from the inside part of the lip out to make the lip
look bigger. All of these techniques have become popular
over the past few years, as big lips are “in”.
Ask your doctor about the relative merits of each of
these techniques, and how they compare to each other.
Does it hurt?
Fortunately, although the lips are quite sensitive,
they are not too sensitive to small cuts (which happen
all the time from the teeth), and pain after the surgery
is usually quite minimal. During the surgery, of course,
the lip would be numb, and it would not hurt at all.
How long does surgery take?
Surgery generally requires approximately one hour.
Do I have to stay in the hospital?
This surgery can usually be performed as an outpatient,
and you can go home immediately after the operation.
Do I need to be put to sleep for the surgery?
Not unless your condition is quite complex or unless
you are very fightened.
Is it safe?
All surgery has some potential risks, including the
risks of bleeding, allergy to the anesthetic, and infection.
In this surgery, serious complications are quite rare.
How long do the results last?
Unfortunately, the results will not last forever.
The body is always changing, and will absorb fat or
collagen that is placed in the lips. In addition, the
lips get smaller with age, and surgery will not halt
this process.
Is there much scarring?
The scarring from this operation is usually quite
minor and well hidden. If you are prone to bad scarring,
however, such as keloids, then you should discuss this
with your doctor.
How long until I can go back to work?
You may decide to make the lips too big at first,
in order to have the augmentation last longer. In this
case, you may look a bit peculiar for the first few
days after the surgery, and may want to stay home from
work. You will need to discuss this further with your
doctor.
How long before I can resume normal activities?
Most normal activities can be resumed within a few
days.

What benefit could I expect
from the surgery?
If you are self-conscious about your lips, then this
surgery can open up many new possilbilities for changing
your image, and you can further enhance them with new
lipstick, makeup, etc. As with most cosmetic surgery,
the benefit you derive will depend upon the change in
attitude that you will have about yourself as a result
of the surgery.
Risks/complications?
All surgery has the risks of scarring, bleeding, and
infection. The health risks from these are relatively
minor in this surgery. If you have lip augmentation
with something other than fat, (such as collagen, silicone,
goretex ,etc.), you will need to discuss with your doctor
any health risks associated with that material.
What are the alternatives?
Several alternatives exist. Lipstick and makeup may
be used to make the lips appear larger than they are.
Tattooing of the lips has also been done in order to
give the appearence of larger size. Surgical correction
includes filling the lips or in rolling tissue from
the inside of the lip towards the outside. To decide
which choice is best for you, discuss the choices with
your doctor.
Special Instructions?
As mentioned above, it is very important to make sure
that there is no infection or bleeding in the lip after
the surgery. You must therefore be very careful to protect
the lips and keep them clean.
